A diamond necklace is a stunning status symbol that can add sophistication and elegance to any type of clothing or for any event. While necklaces started out as a cord or chain around the neck, they have evolved to be beautiful works of jewelry art and design.
Diamond necklaces can range from the classic diamond solitaire pendant to elaborate designs holding hundreds of diamonds. The allure and fascination with the diamond necklace is not a new phenomenon. One of the world's most famous diamond necklaces was give to Marie Antoinette by King Louis XVI. The focal point of the diamond necklace was the Hope Diamond, weighing 45.52 carats and breathtaking in it's extremely rare deep blue color. If you are interested in history and want to hear about the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, click here.
The diamond solitaire necklace, already a jewelry wardrobe staple, is bigger than ever. What's new about diamond solitaires is the wide variety of designs you have. Here are some of the more popular styles of necklaces.

Cartier has been associated for many years with India since it was one of the first few luxury houses that used to sell to the Maharajahs as early as the late nineteenth century. Jacques Cartier, one of the Cartier brothers, male several trips to India starting 1911, when he visited on the occasion of the Delhi durbar and also in 1928 when the most famous diamond necklace in the world was created by Cartier Paris for Bhupindar Singh of Patiala. Ever since, an intensified relationship was built between Cartier and the Maharajahs.
On April 23, 1990, a crowd gathered at Sotheby’s to bid on a collection of jewelry belonging to Paulette Goddard, a former Ziegfeld Follies showgirl who had overcome childhood poverty to become one of Hollywood’s wealthiest and most glamorous stars.
The collection included Paulette’s famous diamond necklace composed of 570 stones (that she said she accumulated “by getting engaged so often. I never give anything back.”), a bombe emerald and diamond bracelet her former husband Charlie Chaplin gave her as a consolation prize when she lost the part of Scarlett O’Hara to Vivien Leigh, and a two-foot string of rubies and diamonds that was so heavy, Paulette used to brag, that she “could only wear it a few minutes at a time.”

Catherine the Great diamond necklace sells for over US$1.5 million at auction
A diamond necklace believed to have been made for 18th
century Russian empress Catherine the Great fetched over US$1.5 million
(Ђ1.3 million) at auction Thursday night in Geneva, but sold at just
below the high-end estimate.
The Affair of the Diamond Necklace
This affair was a scandal that took place at the court of King Louis XVI of France just before the French Revolution. An adventuress who called herself the comtesse de La Motte duped Cardinal de Rohan, the grand almoner, who was out of favor with Queen Marie Antoinette, into believing that she could regain the queen's regard for him. Mme de La Motte and her accomplices then engineered a sham correspondence between the cardinal and the queen and even arranged an interview between him and a woman impersonating the queen. In the interview the cardinal was led to believe that the queen wished to acquire a diamond necklace of enormous value and that she had chosen him as her confidential agent. When Rohan obtained the necklace from the jewelers, he turned it over to the comtesse; her husband took it to London, where it was broken up for sale. The affair became public after Rohan failed to meet the payments to the jewelers. The cardinal was arrested and tried by the parlement; he was acquitted but lost his position in court. Mme de La Motte was punished and imprisoned, but she escaped to London, where she wrote her highly questionable memoirs. Alessandro Cagliostro, at first suspected of complicity, was acquitted. The queen, noted for her extravagance and frivolity, was unjustly implicated in the affair; her enemies hinted that she had schemed to ruin the cardinal or that she had used her favor to obtain the necklace and then refused to pay. The scandal added greatly to her unpopularity at a critical time. A vast literature has grown around the subject, notably Dumas's romance The Queen's Necklace and Carlyle's Diamond Necklace
